The Why Behind the Work

Purpose, Identity & Long-Term Growth

Why Are You Really Playing?

“I’ve got to chat with you.”

When an athlete says that—and the tone is different—you know it’s not about a highlight or a win.

Recently, one of my athletes told me they were stepping away from their sport.

And here’s what stood out:

It wasn’t about failure.
It wasn’t about burnout.
It was about clarity.

At some point, every athlete faces that moment. High school. College. Pro.

No one plays forever.

Which makes this question even more important.

The Question That Changes Everything

Why are you doing this?

Not the surface-level answer.

Go deeper:

• Why do I play?
• What do I actually love about it?
• What keeps me coming back?
• What does that say about who I am?

Most athletes never slow down long enough to ask.

They just keep going.

But when you understand your “why,” everything shifts.

What Purpose Actually Does

Your “why” is what:

• Carries you through hard practices
• Keeps you training when no one’s watching
• Helps you choose discipline over comfort
• Anchors you when results don’t go your way

Without purpose, the grind feels heavy.

With purpose, it feels meaningful.

Whether you’re:

• A starter
• A role player
• Chasing a scholarship
• Trying to earn minutes
• Or just trying to level up

Knowing your reason changes how you show up.

Clarity Is Power

For the athlete I mentioned?

That conversation didn’t end in disappointment.

It ended in peace.

Because they understood what the game gave them—and why it mattered.

And when you understand that, you can either:

• Double down with conviction
or
• Step away without regret

Both require clarity.

Final Thought

Keep asking the right questions.

Why do you train?
Why do you compete?
Why does this matter to you?

When you find that answer, protect it.

Because purpose fuels performance.
