"What you do after practice plays a big role in what you get from practice."
A lot of athletes finish practice thinking the work is done.
Shoes off.
Grab the phone.
Head home.
Maybe eat later.
I've always thought that's an interesting way to look at training because what you do after the workout has a lot to do with the results you get from it.
You just asked your body to sprint, jump, lift, change direction, and perform at a high level.
That costs something.
Energy stores are lower.
Muscle tissue needs to recover.
Your nervous system has work to do.
And if you're training again tomorrow, the recovery process has already started.
The question is:
Are you helping it?
Most athletes focus on the workout itself.
The drills.
The conditioning.
The strength training.
The competition.
Those things matter.
But the workout is only the stimulus.
Adaptation happens afterward.
When practice ends, your body immediately begins repairing, rebuilding, and preparing for the next demand.
Without proper recovery, that process becomes more difficult.
That's why the hours following training are so important.
They're not separate from your training.
They're part of it.
This is where nutrition becomes one of the most effective recovery tools available.
You don't need a complicated recovery protocol.
You don't need expensive supplements.
You need to eat.
Ideally, your post-practice meal or snack should contain both carbohydrates and protein.
Carbohydrates help replenish the energy you used during training.
Protein provides the building blocks your body needs to repair and rebuild muscle tissue.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is giving your body the resources it needs while recovery is already underway.
A good post-practice recovery snack doesn't have to be complicated.
Some simple examples include:
Greek yogurt and fruit
Chocolate milk and a banana
A turkey sandwich
A protein shake and fruit
A balanced meal when you get home
The specific food matters less than consistently fueling your body after training.
Small habits repeated regularly often produce the biggest results.
What I don't love seeing is an athlete finishing a hard practice at 5:00 PM...
Eating nothing afterward...
Then finally having dinner three hours later.
By that point, they're exhausted.
Starving.
Low on energy.
And often wondering why they feel sluggish the next morning.
The workout may be over, but recovery can't wait indefinitely.
The sooner you begin replenishing what your body used, the better prepared you'll be for the next training session.
You already put the work in.
Now give your body a chance to benefit from it.
Because today's post-practice meal isn't really about today's practice.
In many ways, it's preparation for tomorrow's.
The athletes who recover well are often the athletes who perform well consistently.
Not because they're doing something extraordinary.
Because they're paying attention to the small habits that support their training.
Don't waste the next two hours.
Use them to recover.
Your future performance depends on it.
