"The recovery process doesn't begin the next morning. It begins with the choices you make in the hour after training."
One question I ask athletes all the time is:
"What did you eat after practice?"
A lot of times the answer is:
"Nothing yet."
Or...
"I'll eat when I get home."
The problem is, "when I get home" can easily turn into an hour or two later.
By then, you've missed one of the best opportunities to help your body recover.
After a hard training session, your body has work to do.
Your muscles have used a significant amount of stored energy. You've stressed your muscles, challenged your nervous system, and created the stimulus for adaptation.
Now your body needs fuel to respond.
That's why what you eat after practice matters more than many athletes realize.
Most athletes spend a lot of time thinking about their pre-workout nutrition.
They want enough energy to perform well.
That's important.
But recovery nutrition deserves just as much attention.
Once training ends, your body begins the process of repairing tissue, replenishing energy stores, and preparing for future performance.
Without the right nutrients, that process becomes more difficult.
You did the hard work during practice.
Now your body needs the resources to benefit from it.
That's why I encourage athletes to eat something within about 30 to 60 minutes after training.
It doesn't need to be complicated.
And it doesn't have to be a huge meal.
The goal is simply to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to begin recovering.
Some simple options include:
Chocolate milk
Greek yogurt with fruit
A turkey sandwich
A protein shake and a banana
None of these meals are perfect.
And that's okay.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's consistency.
Athletes often look for ways to improve performance through harder training.
More drills.
More practice.
More workouts.
But sometimes the biggest opportunity isn't adding more work.
It's improving recovery habits.
The hour after training is one of those opportunities.
A small recovery meal can help support muscle repair, restore energy levels, and prepare your body for the next training session.
Over time, those choices add up.
Recovery doesn't start when you wake up the next morning.
It starts with the choices you make after you leave the gym.
If you want to get more out of your training this week, don't just focus on the workout itself.
Pay attention to what happens afterward.
Because your next practice begins with how you recover from the last one.
