Your Metabolism Isn't the Problem

“Most people don't have a broken metabolism—they have a body that's demanding less than it used to.”

Why Things Feel Harder Than They Used To

At some point, many adults notice a shift.

Energy isn't quite the same.

Recovery takes longer.

Managing body weight feels harder than it did ten years ago.

And the explanation usually sounds something like:

"My metabolism must be slowing down."

It's an understandable conclusion.

But in many cases, it's not the whole story.

What Actually Changes Over Time

Yes, metabolism changes as we age.

But not nearly as dramatically as most people believe.

What often changes much more significantly is everything surrounding it:

  • Less daily movement

  • Less muscle mass

  • More sitting

  • Higher stress

  • Poorer sleep

  • Less consistent strength training

These changes happen gradually, which makes them easy to overlook.

Until the effects start showing up.

A Common Pattern We See

Recently, I was talking with someone who felt frustrated because they were "eating the same" but gaining weight more easily than before.

At first glance, it seemed like a metabolism issue.

But when we looked closer, almost everything else had changed.

They moved less throughout the day.

Strength trained less consistently.

Sleep quality had declined.

Stress levels were much higher.

The food hadn't changed much.

The lifestyle around the food had.

And that's an important distinction.

Why Muscle Matters More Than People Realize

Research continues to show that maintaining muscle mass plays a major role in long-term metabolic health.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue.

It requires energy to maintain.

It helps support daily activity.

And it improves your ability to handle the demands of life.

When adults stop strength training or gradually lose muscle mass, the body's overall energy demands decrease.

That's very different from having a "broken metabolism."

The body is simply adapting to lower demands.

The Problem With Extreme Dieting

This is one reason drastic diets often backfire.

People eat less.

Move less.

Train less.

And over time, they lose muscle along with body weight.

The body adapts accordingly.

  • Energy drops

  • Recovery slows

  • Strength declines

And eventually everything feels harder.

Not because metabolism is broken.

Because the system has been stripped of the very things that help keep it functioning well.

What Actually Moves the Needle

Most adults don't need metabolism hacks.

They usually need a return to fundamentals:

✅ More daily movement
✅ Consistent strength training
✅ Better recovery habits
✅ Sufficient protein intake
✅ Better sleep quality
✅ Sustainable nutrition habits

None of those are flashy.

But they're the things that work.

Build a Body With Demands

The goal isn't to trick your metabolism.

It's to build a body that still has demands.

A body with muscle.

A body that moves regularly.

A body that can recover and adapt.

Because when those things are present, metabolic health tends to take care of itself.

So before assuming your metabolism is broken, take a look at the bigger picture.

The answer is often less complicated than it seems.

And the solution is usually found in the basics.
