Are You Actually Quick?

Can you get off the ground fast?

A lot of athletes can jump.

But not all athletes are quick.

And that difference shows up immediately in competition.

Because in sport, you rarely get a perfect setup.

You don’t have time to load, think, and then explode.

You have to react.

  • Second jump

  • Quick cut

  • Immediate change of direction

That’s not just strength.

That’s reactivity.

Why Reactivity Changes the Game

Here’s what matters:

Can you hit the ground—and get off it quickly?

Research in performance shows that athletes who can minimize ground contact time while still producing force are:

  • Faster

  • More explosive

  • More efficient

In simple terms, reactivity comes down to:

  • Quick ground contact

This drill targets a key piece of athleticism that often gets overlooked.

Reactivity.

What This Exercise Really Trains

When done correctly, this movement develops:

  • Fast ground contact

  • Ankle and lower leg stiffness

  • Postural control under speed

  • Rhythm and timing

You’re not trying to jump as high as possible.

You’re training your body to be quick, controlled, and responsive.

It’s Not Just the First Jump

This is where most athletes miss the mark.

They focus only on how high they can jump.

But in games, it’s rarely about the first effort.

It’s about:

  • The second jump

  • The third effort

  • The ability to react immediately

The athlete who gets off the ground faster has the advantage.

The athlete who doesn’t need to reset is the one who makes plays.

Final Thought

Train to jump high.

But also train to react.
