Train What You Can't See

August 28, 20263 min read

"The muscles you see in the mirror may get the attention, but the muscles you can't see are often the ones keeping you strong, stable, and moving well."

When most people start training, they focus on what they can see in the mirror.

Chest.

Shoulders.

Abs.

The so-called "mirror muscles."

And there's nothing wrong with wanting to build those areas.

But here's the problem.

The backside of the body often gets neglected.

The upper back.

The glutes.

The posterior shoulders.

The deep core stabilizers.

These muscles may not get the same attention, but they play a major role in how you move, feel, and perform every day.

Research and coaching experience consistently point to the same reality: when the posterior chain becomes weak or undertrained, other problems often follow.

Poor posture.

Shoulder discomfort.

Lower back pain.

Reduced strength output.

That's why building a strong body requires more than pressing, pushing, and looking good in the mirror.

It requires balance.

Strength Is More Than Pressing

Many adults spend a large portion of their workouts performing pushing exercises.

Bench presses.

Push-ups.

Shoulder presses.

These movements are valuable.

But if they're not balanced with exercises that develop stability and support on the backside of the body, movement quality can start to suffer.

Strong pressing muscles need a stable foundation.

Your shoulders need support from the upper back.

Your arms need coordination with the trunk.

Your core needs to stabilize while the rest of your body moves.

That's where integrated training becomes important.

A Simple Exercise With Big Benefits

One exercise we use to develop these qualities is the Prone Plank Get Up.

Watch the Exercise:

At first glance, it isn't particularly flashy.

There are no heavy weights.

No complicated equipment.

No impressive-looking tricks.

But don't let that fool you.

The exercise challenges several key qualities at the same time:

✅ Shoulder stability

✅ Core control

✅ Scapular strength

✅ Coordination between the upper body and trunk

As you move from the plank position and back again, your body must remain stable while transitioning through multiple points of support.

That's a skill that carries over well beyond the gym.

Real Life Requires Stability

Unlike many gym exercises, life doesn't happen in isolated positions.

You're constantly moving while trying to maintain control.

Getting up off the floor.

Pushing yourself up from the ground.

Reaching for something overhead.

Carrying a heavy object.

Catching yourself if you lose balance.

These activities require your body to stabilize before it can create force.

The Prone Plank Get Up helps reinforce that ability.

Instead of isolating one muscle, it teaches the body to work as a connected system.

And that's how movement happens in the real world.

Build Durability, Not Just Muscle

Strength training isn't just about adding muscle.

It's about building a body that can handle the demands of everyday life.

A body that stays resilient.

A body that moves efficiently.

A body that continues performing well over time.

If you've been focusing mostly on pushing movements, consider this your reminder:

Train what you can't see.

Because the muscles behind you are often the ones supporting everything in front of you.

And when those muscles get stronger, everything else tends to work a little better too.
