"Mobility isn't something that disappears overnight. More often, it's a skill the body slowly stops practicing."
It's interesting how often people tell me,
"I woke up one day and suddenly got stiff."
The truth is...
It probably didn't happen overnight.
Mobility usually changes little by little.
You stop reaching overhead as often.
You stop getting down on the floor.
You avoid twisting because it feels uncomfortable.
Weeks become months.
Months become years.
Then one day, a movement that used to feel completely normal suddenly feels difficult.
That's when most people notice it.
Not when the change begins.
But when it becomes impossible to ignore.
One of the biggest misconceptions about mobility is that it's something you either have or don't have.
In reality, mobility is heavily influenced by how you move every day.
Your body adapts to what you repeatedly ask it to do.
If you regularly squat, reach, rotate, bend, and move through a variety of positions, your body has a reason to maintain those abilities.
If you stop using those movements, your body gradually becomes less efficient at performing them.
It's not punishment.
It's adaptation.
The body keeps what it uses.
Research on aging continues to show that regular movement plays a major role in maintaining mobility over time.
Not perfect movement.
Not extreme stretching.
Just consistently taking your joints through the ranges of motion they were designed to use.
That's one of the reasons we encourage movements such as:
Squatting
Reaching overhead
Rotating through the trunk
Stepping in different directions
Getting up and down from the floor
These movements aren't just exercises.
They're rehearsals for everyday life.
They help maintain the abilities you'll rely on for years to come.
The body has a simple principle.
It keeps what you use.
If you regularly move through healthy ranges of motion, your body has a reason to maintain them.
If you stop using those ranges altogether, your body gradually decides they're no longer necessary.
That's why mobility often feels like it disappears slowly.
It's rarely the result of a single event.
More often, it's the result of years of avoiding certain movements without realizing it.
Mobility isn't something you lose because of one birthday.
More often, it's something you slowly stop practicing.
And the good news is that practice can start again.
You don't need a perfect routine.
You don't need hours of stretching every day.
You simply need to start moving.
Reach more.
Squat more.
Rotate more.
Explore the movements your body was designed to perform.
Because the best time to maintain your mobility was years ago.
The second-best time is today.
