Walking Isn't Enough to Maintain Muscle

October 12, 2026•3 min read

"Walking is one of the best things you can do for your health. But if your goal is maintaining strength as you age, walking and strength training aren't interchangeable."

I want to be careful with this one because walking is fantastic.

I want people walking.

Walk the neighborhood.

Walk the dog.

Take the stairs.

Keep doing all of it.

Walking is accessible, effective, and one of the simplest ways to stay active.

But there's a myth I hear occasionally:

"If I'm walking regularly, I don't really need strength training."

Those are two different things.

And as we get older, understanding that difference becomes increasingly important.

Walking and Strength Training Have Different Jobs

Walking is excellent for keeping you moving.

It challenges your cardiovascular system.

It helps maintain general activity levels.

It supports overall health.

But strength training provides a different stimulus.

It gives your muscles a reason to adapt.

A reason to stay strong.

A reason to maintain their ability to produce force.

Without that challenge, the body has little incentive to preserve muscle mass and strength over time.

That's why regular walking and regular strength training are complementary, not competing, activities.

Life Requires More Than Forward Motion

Think about the activities that challenge you in daily life.

Lifting a heavy suitcase into the car.

Standing up from a low chair.

Carrying groceries up a flight of stairs.

Getting yourself off the floor.

Catching yourself when you stumble.

These aren't endurance tasks.

They're strength tasks.

Your muscles need to generate force to perform them.

And sometimes they need to do it quickly.

Walking helps keep you active.

But it doesn't necessarily expose your muscles to enough resistance to prepare you for every physical demand life presents.

Why Strength Matters More with Age

One of the goals of aging well is maintaining independence.

Not just being able to move.

Being able to do things.

Carry things.

Lift things.

Recover from unexpected situations.

Navigate daily activities with confidence.

Strength plays a major role in all of those abilities.

The stronger and more capable your muscles remain, the easier it becomes to continue participating in the activities you enjoy.

That's why strength training isn't just for athletes.

It's for anyone who wants to maintain physical capacity over the long term.

You Don't Need to Become a Weightlifter

When people hear "strength training," they often imagine heavy barbells and intense gym workouts.

That's not the only option.

Strength training can include:

  • Squats

  • Step-ups

  • Lunges

  • Carrying weights

  • Push-ups

  • Resistance bands

  • Dumbbell exercises

  • Bodyweight movements

The goal isn't to become a competitive lifter.

The goal is to challenge your muscles enough that they continue adapting.

Your starting point may look very different from someone else's.

That's okay.

The principle remains the same.

Keep Both

I don't think the conversation should be walking or strength training.

I think it should be walking and strength training.

Walk for your health.

Walk for your heart.

Walk because movement matters.

Then find appropriate ways to challenge your muscles too.

Squat.

Push.

Pull.

Carry.

Step.

Build the strength needed for everyday life.

Because walking helps you keep moving.

Strength training helps ensure you can do something when you get there.

And that's a combination worth maintaining for the rest of your life.
