"Strength is valuable. But for athletes, the ability to maintain that strength while moving is what makes it useful."
We talk a lot about upper-body strength with athletes.
Bench press.
Push-ups.
Rows.
Pull-ups.
All of them are valuable.
They help build strength, improve force production, and create a foundation for athletic performance.
But there's another question I like asking:
Can you maintain that strength while the rest of your body is moving?
Because that's what sports actually demand.
Very few athletic movements happen from a perfectly stable position.
You're running.
Changing direction.
Absorbing contact.
Fighting for position.
Reacting to an opponent.
The ability to stay strong while everything around you is changing is what separates gym strength from usable athletic strength.
In the weight room, it's easy to judge strength by the amount of weight you can lift.
And that's important.
But sport doesn't care what your bench press is.
Sport cares whether you can maintain position under pressure.
Can you stay upright when someone bumps you?
Can you hold your position while sprinting?
Can you control your body while producing force?
Athletes who can do those things often perform better because they can apply their strength in real-world situations.
That's where integrated training becomes important.
One of my favorite exercises for developing this quality is the Double Arm Rack Carry (DA Rack Carry).
Watch the Exercise:
At first glance, it looks incredibly simple.
Pick up the weights.
Walk.
That's it.
But like many great exercises, the simplicity is deceiving.
There's a lot happening beneath the surface.
As you carry the load, several systems have to work together at the same time.
Your upper body must maintain position.
Your trunk must stabilize the load.
Your shoulders need to resist collapsing as fatigue sets in.
Your hips and legs have to continue moving efficiently underneath you.
And every step introduces new forces your body has to manage.
The exercise challenges:
✅ Upper-body endurance
✅ Trunk stability
✅ Postural control
✅ Shoulder positioning
✅ Whole-body coordination
✅ Force management during movement
These are all qualities athletes rely on during competition.
Think about situations athletes encounter every game.
Fighting for position under a basketball hoop.
Maintaining control while carrying the ball through contact.
Holding off a defender.
Running while absorbing force from an opponent.
In these situations, your upper body doesn't get to operate independently.
It must stay organized while the rest of the body continues to move.
That's exactly what the DA Rack Carry teaches.
The goal isn't simply to hold weight.
The goal is to maintain position while moving.
When performing the DA Rack Carry, don't think about simply reaching the other side of the room.
Instead focus on:
Staying tall through your posture
Keeping the load controlled
Maintaining a consistent rack position
Walking naturally and efficiently
Avoiding excessive leaning or compensation
Most importantly, pay attention to whether your position looks the same on the last few steps as it did on the first few.
That's where the exercise becomes challenging.
Anyone can start in a good position.
The question is whether you can maintain it.
We're not just trying to build an upper body that can produce force.
We're building one that can maintain its position while everything else is happening around it.
That's what competition demands.
That's what allows athletes to stay strong under pressure.
And that's what helps strength developed in training actually show up during sport.
Because the most useful strength isn't strength that's only available when everything is perfect.
It's strength that holds up when things get messy.
And for athletes, that's the kind that matters most.
