Your Back Isn't as Fragile as You Think

September 04, 20263 min read

"Your back is designed to move. The goal isn't to avoid movement forever. It's to build the strength and confidence to move well."

I hear some version of this pretty regularly:

"I have a bad back, so I'm careful not to bend too much."

I understand where that comes from.

If bending has hurt before, avoiding it feels like the safe thing to do.

Nobody wants to repeat an experience that caused pain.

But I think we need to be careful with the idea that your spine should always stay perfectly straight.

Your back is designed to move.

It bends.

It extends.

It rotates.

And while movement quality matters, the movement itself isn't automatically the problem.

Movement Isn't the Enemy

For a long time, many people were taught that protecting the back meant avoiding certain positions altogether.

Don't bend.

Don't round your back.

Don't twist.

But everyday life doesn't work that way.

Think about how often you naturally move your spine throughout the day.

Tying your shoes.

Loading the dishwasher.

Working in the yard.

Picking something up from the floor.

Reaching into the back seat of your car.

These activities all require movement.

Your spine was built to handle movement.

The challenge is making sure you have the strength, mobility, and confidence to do it well.

Respect Limitations Without Living Inside Them

That doesn't mean technique doesn't matter.

And it certainly doesn't mean you should ignore pain and force your way through something.

Pain is information.

It deserves attention.

But there is a difference between respecting a limitation and turning it into a permanent rule.

Too often, people stop moving in certain ways because they assume those movements are dangerous.

Over time, they become less comfortable with those positions.

Not because the movement is harmful.

But because they stop practicing it.

The body adapts to what it regularly does.

And it also adapts to what it avoids.

Building Confidence Through Movement

That's why our focus is usually on helping people gradually rebuild capacity.

That might mean:

  • Starting with a smaller range of motion

  • Learning how to hinge at the hips

  • Building strength in positions that feel comfortable

  • Progressively increasing movement options over time

The goal isn't to force movement.

The goal is to expand what's possible.

Each successful repetition gives your body another reason to trust the movement.

And over time, confidence grows.

A Better Long-Term Strategy

To me, that's a much better long-term strategy than treating your back like something that could break at any moment.

A resilient body is one that can bend.

Rotate.

Reach.

Lift.

And respond to the demands of everyday life.

The more capable you become in those positions, the less intimidating they often feel.

Because most people don't want to spend their lives avoiding movement.

They want to participate in it.

Your Body Is Adaptable

Respect your current limitations.

But don't automatically turn them into permanent ones.

Your body is remarkably adaptable.

Given the right amount of movement, the right amount of strength, and the right progression, it can often do far more than people expect.

Your back isn't as fragile as you think.

And sometimes the first step toward feeling better is rebuilding trust in your ability to move.
