Want to make this the BEST ski season ever??
If you’ve been dreaming of white powdery snow, new skis waxed and prepped, and trekking up north so you can grab the first run of the day to break the trails - we’re talking to you!
Hi - My Name is Shelby Turcotte, and I’m the owner of Shelby Trained. Over my nearly 2 decades of training clients to improve their performance, reduce their risk of injury, and help them enjoy their day-to-day activities - including skiing!
While I’m much wiser after having worked with hundreds of clients, there are a few “secrets” that I feel like every skier should know. In the past I’d hold these close to me, but at this point, I’m older (and wiser), and simply looking to impact more people…so I’ve decided to share that list:
6 Things Every Skier Should Know
Reducing your risk of injury comes down to controlling the variables you can control. You can’t control how icy the conditions are.You can’t control how warm or cold it is. You can’t control how many others have used the trails.
Knee injuries happen because stress is distributed to weak areas. You hear all of the time how people hurt their knees (torn ligaments, tweaks, etc.). While not all are preventable, training your body to control force and reduce additional stress to ‘weak’ areas is an option.
Fatigue isn’t age-related. I often hear from our adult clients (40+) that their legs burn and get tired. “I wish my legs wouldn’t get so tired…” Conditioning is entirely preventable. It comes down to smart training that doesn't just work your ‘cardio’ but trains the right muscles in the right positions so you also improve your performance!
Most train their core incorrectly! Your ability to contract and control your ‘core’ has a direct influence on your body’s ability to distribute stress (see above). Gone are the days of crunches to give you a ‘strong’ core. Where most people go wrong is that they don’t train their core to contract in similar positions that they'll encounter on the slopes. We train our clients to not only isolate their core, but to integrate it back into their movements. Think about this: when was the last time you activated your core or trained in a staggered leg type of position (lunge, etc.)? I thought so…
You’re not conditioning, effectively. A lot of people are going to be mad at me, but the reality is running isn’t conditioning. The elliptical isn’t conditioning. Biking isn’t conditioning. It’s not that they don’t have value, but in terms of preparing your legs for skiing you need to understand there are two systems you’re conditioning: the cardiovascular system (your heart/lungs) and your muscular system (muscles). While many people are focused on the cardiovascular piece (and it matters), rarely do I see people training their muscles to function in the correct manner. This is part of why skiers often notice that their legs feel tired before their breathing does.
You can’t ski to get in shape for skiing. I’m big on this, but too many times athletes (and yes, skiers are athletes) try to do their particular activity over and over think that that’s preparation. Let me ask you this: if you had a math test would you just keep taking practice tests, or would you work on accumulating the knowledge to complete tests - then practice?
That’s it. There are 6 of my best kept secrets for skiers.
I wish that I could tell you that most skiers were doing all 6, but rarely do I see that. In fact, I’d tell you that the majority of people are completely unaware of at least a few. On top of that, I think that many people may be aware that the core matters, or that they need to reduce stress to certain joints, but they simply don’t know how.
Simply doing a bunch of lunges or squats without addressing any mobility restrictions that may prevent you from optimizing your movement won’t work. Or doing a bunch of planks thinking that you’re preparing your core to stabilize for longer is missing the point ...when was the last time you came down the mountain standing completely upright with your feet side by side and your core engaged?
And flexibility is all about touching your toes right? And that reduces the risk of injury, right? Wrong. Flexibility is about having tissue extensibility in the ‘right’ places so that you can then train your body to move through those positions.
At the end of the day you need a complete program.
A program that understands the risks of a skier…and how to mitigate the risks.
A program that understands how to manage movement so that unnecessary stress does NOT shift to your knee(s).
A program that gives you energy and develops ski-specific conditioning so that your muscles and your cardiovascular system have the right amount of stimulation.
A program that isolates your weaknesses and then re-integrates it back into functional movement that will transfer to the slopes (including core, balance, and strength).
This is where we come in.
Introducing the 2025 Shelby Trained Ski Challenge.
It’s an all-encompassing program that begins on December 8th and goes for 6 weeks (ending January 19th).
We have multiple options, including in-person, remote, and hybrid. This means you can follow our programming whether you’re in Yarmouth, another state, or even another country!
On top of that, we're raffling off a $500 Ski Package for those who participate.
How’s that so? It’s simple.
Our Ski Challenge will put you on a program, tell you what to do, how to do it, and our coaches will help make sure it gets done. Complete at least 3 weeks of training, and you'll be entered in the raffle. The WINNER of the raffle will win the $500 Ski Package (winner can choose between a 2-5 day ticket package or $500 gift card to a mountain of your choice - choose between Sugarloaf, Sunday River, Pleasant or Loon)
How can you go wrong?!
Get in shape for skiing.
Join a great community (the Shelby Trained fam).
Chance to win a great prize.
And have fun!
So how do you enter? It’s simple, 3 ways:
Call us: 207-212-8371 and let us know you want in. We’ll get you set up in our system and tell you what steps to take.
Email us: [email protected], and we'll follow up and let you know how to proceed.
Head over here: Shelby Trained and register (click “sign up”, then “membership”, and then look for “Ski Challenge”).
Hold on, Shelby…
Yes, I think that the Ski Challenge would benefit me, but what’s the cost? Great question. It depends on what you’re looking for and where you’re located (our physical location is 2 DeLorme Drive, Suite 150, Yarmouth, Maine 04096).
If you’re looking for hands-on coaching, more community, and the highest level of service, you’ll want to do “in-person” with us:
Our Ski Silver Plan is $250 for the 6 weeks. It includes 1 semi-private session per week; remote programming specific to your goals when you’re not here; gym access; nutrition consultation (in-person or remote); daily coaching access (via our app); weekly accountability;
Our Ski Gold Plan is $400 for the 6 weeks. It includes all of the above, plus an additional in-person session (2 semi-private sessions per week), daily accountability (text), “recovery lite” plan (customized stretching plan and nutrition components).
Our Ski Platinum Plan is $550 for the 6 weeks. It includes everything from the Ski Gold plan, plus 1 more additional in-person session (3 semi-private sessions per week); as well as a customized nutrition plan, daily accountability (text), as well as our “recovery” plan (which includes nutrition success kit, dynamic compression sessions, and customized stretching plan with a coach).
If you’re not close to Yarmouth, or looking for something where you’re more autonomous, we can chat about our options!
That’s it!
So here’s the catch.
Because we offer much of this in-person, and because of our level of personalization, we’re limited on the number of in-person participants we can take. On top of that, because of the reputation that we’ve built, we want to make sure we deliver on the program!
At the moment, we have 10 SPOTS maximum (depending on which program people sign up for).
That’s all I’ve got for you right now. I shared my secrets, told you how to fix them, and gave you some options to help out.
If you’ve still got questions for us, feel free to text, email, or call us, and we’re happy to chat to see if the Ski Challenge might be a good fit for you.
Hope to see you join us!

Shelby and The Shelby Trained Team

Check out what our client Gregg has to say about his experience:
To be honest, I’ve never been fond of spending time in a gym. I would much rather be outside playing my sports - tennis, skiing and mountain biking. After defaulting from a team tennis match in the fall of 2012 with yet another back injury, it was time to join Shelby Trained!
While injury prevention was my initial goal, I soon started to see other benefits surface in my overall performance playing my sports. The most notable was the strength of my core as well as improved balance and power. For me the greatest gauge of Shelby’s program is noting the fact that I am still telemark skiing today, at 66. Telemark skiing is very physically demanding and I fully expected to hang up my gear and go back to alpine skiing when I turned 60 or earlier. I am happy to report that has not happened.
I can’t thank enough the whole crew of dedicated and professional trainers at Shelby Trained.
